The University of Health Sciences Antigua is excited to announce a new partnership with Mount St. John’s Medical Centre in St. Johns, Antigua, which will improve the overall health of the island by creating programs that promote community education, health screening clinics and prevention.
Mount St. John’s Medical Centre is one of the island’s largest employers with a workforce of nearly 500 and a medical staff of over 200. It is a 185-bed hospital offering a full range of services, from primary care to advanced critical care.
As two leading health care institutions in Antigua, this partnership will develop common educational programs that will benefit faculty, staff, students and the community at large by sharing resources. By fostering common health sciences research programs, the Antiguan community will benefit.
Recently, 28 UHSA medical students began their clinical rotations at Mount St. John’s Medical Centre. UHSA students will benefit by having the opportunity to shadow physicians and visit with real patients. They will share the medical centre’s library, online databases and information technology resources. Faculty at Mount St. John’s Medical Centre will serve as clinical instructors at UHSA and will be assisting at The Free Clinic of English Harbour, which is operated by UHSA.
“UHSA is dedicated to training excellent physicians and this partnership will further provide students the experience they need to become leaders in the health care workforce,” says Dr. Manuel Flores, UHSA Executive Vice President & Provost. “This partnership allows our students the opportunity for extensive clinical experiences, while providing the medical centre with more hands to provide care to the local community and the rising patient population. It is a win-win for the island of Antigua.”
