The Fall 2020 trimester is off to a great start at UHSA!
As many of you already know, UHSA has transitioned to a virtual learning space during the COVID-19 pandemic. Following an online orientation on Monday, classes are already underway with students meeting online for lectures, tutorials, and problem-based learning.
UHSA has designed the myUHSA online learning space to ensure that students receive the same high-quality education during the COVID-19 pandemic that they would if they were learning in person on the beautiful island of Antigua.
Pre-recorded Lectures – Freedom to Watch When You Want
Using the flipped-classroom model, students have access to pre-recorded video lectures. Having access to pre-recorded lectures that they can watch any time is a huge advantage. No more getting behind while taking notes, or asking the professor to repeat something! Now all you have to do is pause, rewind, and repeat as many times as needed. These pre-recorded lectures have proven so popular that they will remain even after the pandemic ends.
Live Tutorials – The Opportunity to Expand Your Understanding
Pre-recorded lectures are just the beginning. Once students have watched lectures, they will meet for group tutorials where their understanding of the lecture material will be tested using short quizzes. These quizzes are designed for students to gauge how well they understand the material, and are formative in nature. Following the quiz, students have the opportunity to ask questions and seek additional insight from faculty members in a back-and-forth setting that resembles a conversation among colleagues more than a traditional classroom lecture.
Online PBL Clinical Cases – Apply What you Learn to Clinical Cases
But that’s not all. Because our goal is to create lifelong learners who can apply the basic sciences to clinical scenarios, students will also meet for live problem-based learning (PBL) sessions. PBL sessions allow the student to demonstrate application of the basic sciences to clinical questions in a setting that resembles clinical rotations. Again, this live interaction resembles more of a conversation between colleagues than a classroom.
A Student-Centered Model for Success
The combination of pre-recorded lectures, access to support material, tutorials, and PBL sessions are all about creating a student-centered learning environment where students can thrive as adult learners as they prepare to enter clinical rotations, residency, and beyond.
